Mark Lipps for City Council
"Staying True to Manhattan Beach Values"

Never Say Die!

As of the last update, I am still in 4th place with a very slim chance of moving up.

As ballots were being tallied, I received a lot of high fives for getting as close as I did with no money, no staff, and a grassroots campaign.  The mayor, city manager and many others pointed out, I must have made a lot of friends in Manhattan Beach to do so well with so few campaign resources.

My thanks go out to all of you!  You are the heart of this city.  You are the group that does not represent special interest.  You are the ones who get up every day and enjoy our town without a hidden agenda.  I am proud to be your neighbor and thank you.

Thank you for your support.

I love you guys from the bottom of my heart.

A fresh voice running for City Council

I am asking for all Manhattan Beach registered voters to give me a seat on our City Council.

Guatemala

Last week Tammy, and I along with members of the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club, delivered textbooks to a few elementary schools in Guatemala.

We worry about kids dropping out of high school; they worry about kids dropping out after 6th grade when their compulsory education ends.

The kids thought it was amazing when we showed them pictures just taken with our digital cameras.

We toured a water sanitation project that the Manhattan Beach Rotary is supporting.  In low income areas near the lake they still wash their clothes on flat rocks the same way they did 500 years ago. Unfortunately, their cleaning chemicals are creating issues with the lake.  We have built shelters for washing clothes that pipes water in and drains through a filtering system that cleanses the water before it is poured back into the lake.

So much we take for granted.

I have spent 17 years living in the tree section; organizing block parties; chairing school fundraisers; coaching youth sports; opening a small business; I’m a Neighborhood Watch block captain; a graduate from Leadership Manhattan and Community Police Academy; a Rotarian; and a consistent local volunteer and fundraiser.

I have no other agenda than hard work, willingness to listen, be responsive, reason and common-sense decision-making. Revenue growth does not mean we have to match with increased expenses. My goal is to concentrate on our infrastructure and facilities plan. Let’s continue to support our public schools. And traffic flow. Let’s keep bicycle theft our No. 1 crime stat.

Our older adults are a resource. If we only knew what they know!

For those of us that want to keep the small beach town, let’s keep pushing to maintain what we have no matter how financially attractive our city is to outsiders.

If any vote ever really counted it is your vote in a local election. The one election where your candidate is a neighbor. You can determine if a candidate shares your same values and priorities. If you would like to ensure a quality lifestyle, no fear, a healthy environment, every excuse not to watch TV and great education, then take responsibility in putting the right people in place on Tuesday, March 5, that represents your family’s best interest. Your vote is a vote for you.

Some things to think about:

  • Just because city revenues go up does that mean that city expenses need to go up to match those revenues?
  • Is adding more parking meters basically a tax increase for the citizens of MB?
  • Are we being careful with overbuilding? Especially with business areas in our downtown and North End.
  • If we find pots of money burning a hole in our pocket should we put towards our infrastructure?
  • Do we need to revitalize Manhattan Village into a place that matches our MB character and charm?
